Managed IT services arrangements can become deeply embedded in daily operations. Before renewal, executives should understand whether the contract still reflects the business's operating needs.

1. What outcomes is the provider responsible for?

Look beyond a menu of technical activities. Identify measurable obligations around service availability, response, restoration, security coordination, and regular reporting.

2. Who owns the technology roadmap?

Make sure strategic priorities and investment recommendations are tied to the organization's goals rather than only to the provider's product catalog.

3. Where does security responsibility begin and end?

Clarify responsibility for monitoring, incident escalation, testing, insurance-related requirements, and access to systems and backups.

4. Are costs transparent?

Separate recurring service fees, product licenses, one-time projects, and out-of-scope work so decision-makers can assess true value.

5. Could you transition providers without disrupting operations?

Document administrative access, credentials, assets, configurations, data ownership, transition support, and exit provisions.

Independent contract and operating-model reviews can help executives identify gaps before making a renewal decision.
